“Hey.” Morgan caught Bea’s attention as the bassist finished off the drink she’d been chugging. “Any chance we could get up there?” She motioned toward an empty corner of the stage. Before the break, a group of people had been dancing on the stage, but they were gone now, and Morgan was back on her feet, ready to be devious. Rory hated being the center of attention, so it would be a shame to haul her adorably tipsy fake girlfriend into the spotlight.

“Oh, hell yeah.” Bea punched her arm. “You belong in the VIP section.”

“We do what?” Rory asked, because she hadn’t seen what Morgan was referring to.

“You’re a VIP,” Morgan said, grabbing her arm before Rory could run away.

Morgan hadn’t been expecting it, but Bea turned out to be an ally. She grabbed Rory’s other arm. “Come on.”

“Morgan!” Rory stumbled up the metal stairs, but she was no match for either Morgan with her additional inches or Bea with her additional mass.

Morgan pushed the remains of her mead at Rory. “Drink this. You said you hate crowds. I’m totally doing you a favor.”

Rory gaped at her, then muttering a curse, she downed the rest of the mead.

“That’s the spirit.” Bea slapped her on the back, possibly a touch too hard.

Rory lurched forward and a spray of honey wine flew from her mouth and landed all over Morgan’s shirt. Rory snorted at the mess she’d made. “That’s what you deserve.”

With a low whine, Morgan glanced down. She’d already spilled mead on herself when she’d fallen over, and now she was well and truly sticky. At least her shirt wasn’t white.

“Whatever,” she said, shaking off this minor setback. “It’s not like I need a clean shirt.”

“Take it off.” Rory raised a suggestive eyebrow and burst into giggles.

In retaliation, Morgan yanked on her, drawing her deeper into the stage area over Rory’s protests.

More people joined them as the band began playing again, and in the thick of the excitement, Morgan soon forgot all about her shirt. She was up here with the band and their select guests, and Rory had gotten another cup of something and appeared to be trying very hard not to sway to the music. Her stubbornness was adorable. Even her glaring was adorable. Morgan would be in such deep shit if she hadn’t already wandered into that lagoon and drowned in it.

“Come on!” She took Rory’s hands and tried twirling her around. But Rory resisted, her feet locked in place, which is how Morgan’s feet got tangled up in hers, their arms twisted too tightly around each other for Morgan’s comfort.

“I hate you!” Rory leaned into her, yelling over the music.

“You can’t say that while you’re smiling.”

“I . . . Fuck!” Rory tried without a smile and failed. “I hate . . .”

“Nope.”

“I—”

“You’re not even trying.”

“Damn it!”

Seizing her momentary distraction, Morgan grabbed Rory’s hands again. Instead of trying to twirl her, she spun them in circles, and oh, that might have been a mistake, because they’d both drunk a bit too much.
